Best Practices for Tree Planting in Melbourne

When it comes to tree planting it may seem quite straightforward and simple.  This isn’t quite the case.  Although it can easily be done there are still certain guidelines that one should follow.  To help make this process a little easier, we’ve decided to list our best practices for Tree Planting.

Best Practices for Tree Planting in Melbourne

Avoid planting too deep

A very common mistake that many will make is plant a tree too deep.  This can be quite detrimental to the growth of the tree.  A good guide for knowing how deep to plant the tree is to look for the ‘trunk flare’.  The trunk flare is where the trunk becomes root.  Plant the tree up to this point.

Prepare the site accordingly

When considering best practices for tree planting, be sure to use native soil.  Native soil without fertilisation is generally best when planting (unless tests show that the soil is missing nutrients).

Take care when staking

When it comes to staking new trees, you really need to be sure the right job is done.  If not, if can be an expensive mistake.  Staking is usually quite costly so only use it when necessary.  When staking, try to provide support to the trunk as low as possible.  Furthermore, try to avoid using wire and pieces of hose. Instead you could try purchasing materials which won’t be detrimental to the trunk.

Find the right tree for the right area

Try not to plant any tree in whichever place.  Do some research first and make sure that it’s a suitable tree for the area.  You can save a lot of money and time in the future when it comes to tree management problems if you simply do a bit of research before starting.

Even though we’ve listed some of our top best practices for tree planting in Melbourne, there are still many more out there to consider.  One resource you may find useful is our blog, on “How to Plant a Tree”.

If you’ve found that some of your trees are starting to become a little overgrown then we can also assist in safely and effectively reducing the size of them or even possibly removing them.
