There are over 1,000 species of bamboo on earth and they can be found all over the world. Bamboo has been found in some of the most diverse regions including the cold mountains to hot, tropical regions. Contrary to popular belief, bamboo is not actually a tree; it’s a plant! In this blog we’ve put together what we believe to be the 5 most interesting uses for bamboo.
So start off, we have our first use for bamboo:
Construction
Bamboo has been used in construction for hundreds of years. The incredible strength of this plant and the large abundance of it make it the perfect building material. Quite often, in many Asian countries you will notice scaffolding that is constructed from bamboo. Bamboo is also used to construct schools and homes!
Fabrics and Clothing
It’s hard to imagine, but yes, bamboo is used for fabrics and clothing. In many countries this is actually a growing trend. In fact, bedding that is made from bamboo is (in most cases) softer than most cotton beddings. If you’ve ever tried out a bamboo pillow you will know exactly what we’re talking about. They are SO comfortable.
Instruments
Possibly one of the more enjoyable uses of bamboo is to create instruments. Being hollow tubes, bamboo makes the perfect woodwind instrument. Not only can it be used to make a great flute or panpipe, but it’s also great for making drums.
Bikes
Yes, bikes. A company in California have been using bamboo to construct bicycles. Although there are other materials used also, the bamboo is primarily used to build the frame. It provides a light-weight, however ridged frame for the bike. Be wary though because these bikes tend to be a little on the expensive side.
Food
This is possibly our favourite one. Bamboo is not only used to feed pandas, but it can also be used to feed us humans. Asian cuisines that utilise the bamboo plant have a very strong place in our hearts. Not only is it really healthy for you, but it’s also quite tasty! Furthermore, another little interesting fact is that the utensils you use in the kitchen could almost entirely be replaced by bamboo made ones!
